C.J. Roy, chairman and founder of the Confident Group, was found with a gunshot injury inside his office near Richmond Circle in Bengaluru on Friday. Staff members who heard the gunshot rushed to his cabin and found him seriously injured. He was taken to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Police said it is too early to say what exactly happened. At first glance it looks like a self-inflicted gunshot, but officers are also checking other possibilities. They said the real cause will be known only after the postmortem and forensic reports.
At the same time, Income Tax officials were carrying out searches at several Confident Group locations. According to sources, C.J. Roy had been questioned over the past few days as part of this investigation. After news of his death, the search operation was stopped and officials began securing important documents and records.
A member of Roy’s family claimed that pressure from investigating agencies had affected him mentally. However, police have not confirmed this and said the investigation is still ongoing.
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said a high-level inquiry will be done to find the truth. Police also repeated that both suicide and murder angles are being looked into.
